Making a difference one person at a time.

2007-2008 ACTIVITIES

Thanks to people like you we were able to make a difference.

VWB coordinates  the volunteer program in Mexico and continues to search out new programs south of the US border and is exploring additional opportunities.

During January 2008 Mary Lightfine, RN and Paul Rooy of Volunteers Without Boundaries (VWB) departed from their Daytona Beach home on an expedition that took three days of travel before arriving in Kasese, a remote south western town in Uganda. With some donated dollars in hand, two laptop computers donated by Rob Davidson (Orange city), a Babylock sewing machine, donated by Grayce Beeman (from The Sewing Garret on Beville road), supplies, books and much more Mary & Paul sought to make a difference in the lives of people who live in make-shift rustic homes without electricity, running water or regular health care. The VWB group met with the Rowenzori Rural Health Services (RRHS) program team leader Kiima T. Charles and visited several small villages where they provided electricity for RRHS and will work together to provide safe drinking water, prevent malaria, improve health care and to and to realize new opportunities for others who want to help make the world a better place.

The needs in this district are great for even the simplest things. This is a country where the average man makes as little as $2.00/day. With your help we can make a difference and will be able to impact about 600,000 individuals including mothers and children in the Rwenzori mountain area. More donor money will be needed to keep this project up and running. Donations towards this project are always welcome.

If you wish to volunteer please see FAQ section for application information. Answers to appropriate questions about this program will appear In the FAQ section. If you have special personal questions that you want personally answered you may send your questions together with a $5.00 donation to Volunteers Without Boundaries and please include a self addressed stamped envelope to Volunteers Without Boundaries at the address listed at the bottom of the page.

THE BIRTH OF VOLUNTEERS WITHOUT BOUNDARIES

After working as a registered nurse in emergency rooms throughout the United States, Mary Lightfine, a woman who thrives on challenges, decided to join an organization called Doctors Without Borders. That decision has changed her life. Since then she has lived and worked in more than a dozen countries, including some of the most hellish spots on earth. Mary was ambushed and shot at in Somalia and delivered babies in the jungles of Sri Lanka. Mary traveled through perilous Afghani Mountains infested with land mines by jeep, foot and Donkey to reach isolated inhabitants. She brought food to starving refugees by plane in south Sudan, after their villages and crops were destroyed by northern government alliances. She was also one of the first to provide medical aid to Kosovar refugees who had experienced unthinkable horrors. Mary, a seasoned veteran of the Nobel Prize winning organization Doctors Without Borders began sharing her moving stories with students across the United States in 2000. After hearing about her experiences numerous students wanted to spend their time helping others abroad but couldn’t find organizations that would accept them into their programs. Most medical volunteer organizations accept only licensed professionals with a minimum of two years prior experience. In collaboration with medical professionals and communities south of the border Mary Lightfine is now able to provide the “opportunity of a lifetime” to others through the founding of Volunteers Without Boundaries Inc., a non profit charity organization.
